Local Guide: Southside Virginia
This area is one of the most pristine, best-kept secrets in the Commonwealth, with natural and historic treasures ranging from Buggs Island Lake, Virginia’s largest, to Charlotte County Courthouse, the only extant courthouse that’s known to have been designed by Thomas Jefferson, to McLean House in Appomattox, the site of the surrender of the Confederacy in 1864. Other memorable spots include Red Hill, Patrick Henry’s home near Brookneal, and Prestwould, Sir Peyton Skipwith’s circa 1795 Georgian-style plantation near Clarksville. Central Virginia, particularly Southside Virginia, offers innumerable places to explore Virginia’s rich history and natural beauty.
